Chicharrita club is a 7-piece band from Canberra playing Peruvian chicha rock de la selva y sierra de Perú. Chicha is also known as Peruvian cumbia – Chicha fuses the tropical sounds of cumbia with the traditional Andean sounds of folkloric huayno. Additional influences from
international genres such as surf and psychedelic rock, salsa, give Chicha a distinct sound. Chicha music was born in Lima at the end of the 1960s.
Formed by Australian and Peruvian members, Chicharrita Club’s music traces the roots of chicha all the way to far reach of Canberra city to sing like the chicharritas – the load bugs from whom they get their name.
